Greetings fellow shipmates. My name is Adrian Alvarado. I reported to the New Jersey on July 7, 1982. I was assigned to the 1st Division. I served on the Jersey until March of 86. The web page is phenomenal . I served aboard the New Jersey when she was in the Philadelphia Navy Shipyard being refitted.  I was transferred, just before She sailed to Bremerton Washington to be decommissioned. I will never forget that Gallant Lady. She was the navy's finest. Her crew and commanding officer Capt Snyder were the best. I am graetful for all the fine memories I have.

On the 21st day of August my three sons and I visited the Jersey. Awesome!! The ship looked great, and the docents were very kind and helpful. My sons enjoyed it as much as I did. They all said, they didn't realize that a battleship would be that big, since I was an HM2, I spent a lot of time working in sickbay, it's not finished yet, but the docents were kind enough to take us down where I spent two and a half years from 52 to 55. My wife3 and I were at the dedication last Oct the volunteers did an outstanding job in preparing the ship for its new assignment. I had the great pleasure of hearing from my sky 1 buddy Dwight Jacobs fc2c(pointer) I was the (trainer). We are plank owners of ww2 vintage. This was the first time we talked to each other since Jan.1946 when I left the ship in Yokohama.

My two brothers and I, just came back from a mini vacation to Camden, New Jersey with my Father. We toured the Ship, and the fact that he was a former crew member (Korean War, 50-52 I believe) one of the docents, and a volunteer took him below to see sickbay. The visit was on Saturday the 21st and I wanted to let you know how thrilled I was to be on my Dad's ship. Thank you for opening the ship up to people.

TO MY AV DIVISION SHIPMATES: Due to failing health I was unable to make the ship's 2002 reunion. I am in a wheelchair now, and I would only would have able to stay only on the main deck. I know they have two elevators now to get aboard the ship but I would not have been able to tour the ship, because of the ship having hatches instead of hallways.  I'm not looking for sympathy but its hell to get old. I'm 76 years old now and that's a long way from being eighteen when I was aboard the JERSEY. I received a e-mail from GARRY MERCURIE, son of GENE MERCURIE. He said his father was killed in a airplane crash in 1973. After his father got out of service he took lessons in flying and became a pilot. By the way after I got out of service and the Korean war was brewing, the government was offering pilots lesson under the G. I. bill so me and a couple of my buddies signed up for them. I got to solo and 44 hours in the air. One day I was suppose to solo cross country in the afternoon.  I checked out a 65 horsepower Aronca and since I lived only a mile from our GENERAL MITCHELL FIELD I told my mother to go in the yard and look up in the sky that I would be flying over the house.  Well I started to do 360,s over the house looking for my mother to be waving a towel so I could fine my house. When your up in the sky it takes awhile to locate something.  I finally saw my mother waving the towel then I noticed another plane close to me.  I found out later he was a instructor from the same flying school and he was checking my altitude.  I was down to 500 feet and was suppose to be no lower then 800 feet. He turned me in to tHe head of the flight school and they washed me out no second chance. I have lived quite a interesting life. well I'm closing for now. A week has past since I jumped into my truck full of anticipation. The anticipation of seeing my Ship and Shipmates for the first time since I left her in Bremerton,WA. 33yrs ago. The entire experience from beginning to end was terrific and most memorable. Hats off to the reunion committee and all the volunteers who's hard work and dedication made the New Jersey look so great. I think its majesty was even more impressive now than then. Friday the 13th was anything but bad luck. What a DAY!  I was almost ready to re-up and I hated the service. It was a special day and everyone treated us, the veterans, in a special way. God even got involved and gave us a perfect day weather wise. We just returned from the reunion on the ship and to say that it was a moving experience is an understatement. I served in A Div during the 2nd cruise to Korea and was able to find many of the compartments I lived and worked in. The berthing compartments were hardest to identify. Later crews had real beds with honest to goodness mattresses. That made the spaces seem much smaller than I remember. Also the mess decks were really different. Formica tables and a salad bar of all things! My only disappointment was not having access to steering engines and after diesel. I did get into #3 engine room and stood in front of the evaporator I tended through those long mid watches. At 70 years old, I don't think I could do it now. Wasn't our youth wonderful. To all the old friends I got to see, Lets plan on doing this again real soon.

09/17/2002, Well shipmates, If you missed the 2002 reunion, you missed a great weekend. It was great to see so many of our shipmates and Admiral Snyder. If he had a dollar for every time he had his picture taken with a crewmember, he'd be a very rich man! The ship is in pretty good shape and just about every area was opened for the crew and their guests to visit. Steve Sheehan and I even got my wife, Judy, down to forward diesel. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this reunion a success. Your work did not go unnoticed, or unappreciated. It is nice to know that there is a way that crew of the USS New Jersey are able to reach each other. When they visited Australia in 1988 the crew were most polite and we hope that they enjoyed their stay downunder. Though it has been a long time since then, I will never forget the crew and four of those crew who became decent friends of ours at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. One even allowed me to stay in his home with him and his wife when visiting LA and to that I am truly Greg, wherever you are. I cannot remember all the guys names but I am sure they remember Kim and I from the Entertainment Centre. We had some downright Aussie fun with you guys.

You are to be commended for your dedication to keeping in touch with your fellow crew. And the poem that was submitted was truly extraordinary.

I had hoped to make the reunion but just can't make it. I hope to get back to Camden in May or June next year. I wish all who can make this reunion a very enjoyable time. Just wanted to put in a recent memo. It's been some time now since I first left a message. To all you shipmates out there that served in the 80's, send me an email and let me know what you are up to. I was in E-Division from '85-'89, and left the New Jersey as an IC3.

The website has come a long way, and congrats to all those involved with keeping it going.

I can't make it to the reunion this year, but am looking forward to one in the future. It would be great to get together with the 1980's E-div and chat about old times.

Subject: How to simulate shipboard life

Suggestions for the ex-sailor who misses the "good old days" (geared to the "surface squid")...

1.Sleep on the shelf in your closet.

2.Replace the closet door with a curtain.

3.Six hours after you go to sleep, have your wife whip open the curtain, shine a flashlight in your eyes, and mumble "Sorry, wrong rack".

4.Renovate your bathroom. Build a wall across the middle of your bathtub and move the shower head down to chest level.

5.When you take showers, make sure you shut off the water while soaping.

6.Every time there's a thunderstorm, go sit in a wobbly rocking chair and rock as hard as you can until you're nauseous.

7.Put lube oil in your humidifier instead of water and set it to "High".

8.Don't watch TV except movies in the middle of the night. Also, have your family vote on which movie to watch, then show a different one.

9.(Mandatory for ex-engineering types) Leave lawnmower running in your living room 24 hours a day for proper noise level.

10.Have the paperboy give you a haircut.

11.Once a week blow compressed air up through your chimney, making sure the wind carries the soot across and onto your neighbor's house. Laugh at him when he curses you. > 12.Buy a trash compactor and only use it once a week. Store up garbage in the other side of your bathtub. > 13.Wake up every night at midnight and have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on stale bread, if anything. (Optional: Canned ravioli or cold soup). > 14.Make up your family menu a week ahead of time without looking in your food cabinets or refrigerator.

15.Set your alarm clock to go off at random times during the night. When it goes off, jump out of bed and get dressed as fast as you can, then run out into your yard and break out the garden hose.

16.Once a month take every major appliance completely apart and then put them back together.

17.Use 18 scoops of coffee per pot and allow it to sit for 5 or 6 hours before drinking.

18.Invite at least 85 people you don't really like to come and visit for a couple of months.

19.Have a fluorescent lamp installed on the bottom of your coffee table and lie under it to read books.

20.Raise the thresholds and lower the top sills on your front and back doors so that you either trip over the threshold or hit your head on the sill every time you pass through one of them.

21.Lockwire the lugnuts on your car.

22.When making cakes, prop up one side of the pan while it is baking. Then spread icing really thick on one side to level off the top.

23.Every so often, throw your cat into the swimming pool, shout "Man overboard, ship recovery!", run into the kitchen and sweep all the pots/pans/dishes off of the counter onto the floor, then yell at your wife for not having the place "stowed for sea".

24.Put on the headphones from your stereo (don't plug them in). Go and stand in front of your stove. Say (to nobody in particular) "Stove manned and ready". Stand there for 3 or 4 hours. Say (once again to nobody in particular) "Stove secured". Roll up the headphone cord and put them away.

I was an EN3 aboard the New Jersey from 55-57. Was in A Division. Was fortunate to work for Navy as a civilian from 1976-1996. Had the opportunity to interview many of the crew who served during her last deployment to Lebanon. My Dad, Tom Mullaney, was on the New Jersey during World War II. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1978 and I wish I could ask him about his experiences during the war. If anyone knew him, please reply back to me. I believe he was the paymaster on the ship for some period of time.

Fellow '80's New Jersey vet's and/or renovation crew, not long after I arrived in Long Beach, CA. (1/82) and our lady was still in Drydock #1 I was the fortunate recipient of a 3/4 view line drawing of how she was to look after her modernization. It's 20"X14", was drawn by an artist named John Leslie in March '82, has a "Naval Ship Weapon System" crest in the lower left corner and a "U.S.Navy Battleship Program" crest in the upper right. Ring any bells? Do any of you have a copy? Was wondering if it's something I should bring along to share at the reunion? Please advise, thanks!

About a year ago when I was on the restoration team and we had just moved the ship to her final berth, I posted I would write back when the elevators from the pier to the ship were operational.

According to an article in today's Courier Post (I posted the web address at the end of my message) they became operational Tue (8/6). The article also describes a new video tour for the folks that cannot navigate the passageways and stairwells. The video was made by The History Channel and Comcast Cable. Before you ask the video (24 mins) is not available to the public, if you want to see it you have to visit the officers lounge off in the wardroom of BB62.

Hello all, I was aboard the Big J 68-70, and was a BT1. I am just joining the USS New Jersey Vets. I plan on attending the reunion in Sept. and looking forward to seeing all my old Shipmates. I am also asking for some help from my shipmates! I have been diagnosed with mesethelioma cancer, which is only caused by asbestos. I have started a law suit against the asbestos companies ( not the Navy) that made the stuff that's killed so many people not knowing it was dangerous. My Doctor's have told me I have less than a year to live, so I am trying to secure a future for my family and not leave them with big medical bills. If anyone would like to help, my attorney's would like to have my co-workers verify that working in the Boiler rooms and engines rooms, we routinely was exposed to asbestos gaskets, packing, refractory, piping insulation and such. I recently visited the jersey on my way back from A.C. I was so disappointed with the parking, $15.00 is quit a bit, plus admission to the ship. I am a member of the sons and daughters of the USS Massachusetts BB59. My father was a plank owner E Division Third class. They do not charge for parking. and admission is $9.00. They also are involved with schools and scouts, doing sleep overs on board and such for educational purpose. Anyway i just wanted to voice my opinion. thank you Robert Vuillemot Jr.

The volunteers did a great job in getting the ship ready for the dedication. My wife Doris and I were present for the CEREMONIES, which was very impressive. We intend to visit with the rest of the family in July. As a new computer owner your web site helped me contact several old shipmates. Spoke to D.Jacobs, my Sky 1 pointer and CPO P.Loughan. I WAS A RADIOMAN 3C ABOARD THE NEW JERSEY AFTER SERVING ABOARD THE USS SPROSTON DD577 DURING THE WW2. YES, I AM A MEMBER AND AM SORRY I CANNOT ATTEND THE REUNION THIS YEAR. Served as a Throttleman in #1 engine room with guys like Mallow, Huckeba, Bradic, Smart, Washburn, Cason, Parks just to name a few. The biggest memory that I have while serving on the Jersey was the day that I became a "Shellback". Thanks to a MMFN Hatch, I broke my neck. With all that aside, It was an honor to serve with those guys and on the Jersey. She was and still is a beautiful lady.

If anyone knows where Al Mullins is, he still owes me a bottle of Jack from the Nebraska-Oklahoma Football game in 1978. "Never bet an A-schooler!"

I recently bought at auction a photo of what I thought was the USS Iowa BB-61 in which my husband was aboard. After Removing the photo from the frame I found out I have a photo of the New Jersey and its crew along with Officers. photo was taken by W. Waterman in Hampton Va. on Saturday October 5th, 1918 I am in hopes that their will be some one who frequents this deck log that would find some interest in this photo it is 20x12 approx. and in Original frame please email me at ctrevino99@hotmail.com  if you are interested in the photo or know of a member from that era who might be interested in this photo. It is in great condition. with only a few marks around the edges of the photo but faces and body of sailors and officers are very visual and can be easily identified.

Reported aboard at shipyard in Philly in 68, with RM2 Pettis Mady, we came from the Naval Communications Station Washington DC. I got sent to ComFour as TAD until we took our first shakedown cruise. Went through the canal, missed liberty in Panama. Remember the family cruise from Long Beach. Remember the tour of Vietnam and how Capt Snyder got us on the gun line and fired our guns so we could draw combat pay for the whole month. Great liberty in Olongopo, Yokosuka, but also remember we didnt get to take our R & R in Australia because of the....never mind, ruffle too many feathers...transferred Dec 69...I still hear from a few of my buddies, Leon Anglin, Pettis Mady, A C Smith, and Robert Gordon....Bunch of others I'd like to hear from....RM2 Bill Wano... sespoquet@att.net

I served aboard from Sept 81 to Nov 84 in # 3 Fireroom along with Chief O'Brient, Pepek, Wrobel, Bardseath and many more. And then again from Feb 88 to March 90. Has any one from B div heard from Gary Balders, Barney Rivera Jim Palladino or the best CHENG in the USN Cmdr J. Herger? Where is Capt "spuds" Katz Or Capt "wetsu" Tucker. My father, James (Jim) R. Shannon served on the New Jersey from 1944 until the end of WWII. He was then called back during the Korean War and was on board when I was born in June of 1951. I was told that when he got the message his wife had given birth to a 3 pound baby girl, he went down to the galley and asked a cook to give him a 3 pound ham so he could see how big a 3 pound baby would be. My father never talked about his time in the Navy. He died in 1971. I would like to hear from anyone who remembers him.

6/27/02 - Just found this site. Served aboard "Big J" from Nov. 1950 to Nov. 1952. Was assigned to 6th, 7th, and L Divisions. Originally from New York City now living in Houston, TX. Remember many of the former shipmates listed in the Log. Sorry can't make it to the reunion in Cherry Hill.

6-27-02 I received my USS NEW JERSEY ring today. It is beautiful (actually awesome). I'm a plankowner and so proud to have this ring to wear as a reminder of our great ship and the time that I served on her from 1943-1946. Thank you Larry Kalakauskis. Your efforts were well worth it. Just found this site and would like to add my "BRAVO ZULU". I was on board during Nam cruise reporting too the Pre-Com detail in San Deigo in Dec 67. I was a BM1 at the time, but made CPO. after arriving in Philly the following April. Although the New Jersey was my second BB, (I was also on the Wisconsin during Korea) this tour was really great. New Jersey was/and is a great ship, but I am also always grateful for the wonderful crew and the great friends that I served with. I would really like to hear from anyone from the 67-68 Viet Nam era and hope we have a big turnout in Sept.in Cherry Hill Tom Santella.

My father served on the BigJ from 1943 to 1946 as a Pharmacist Mate 3rd class. The family including Dad are planning to visit this great ship Sept 7th 2002. We are all looking forward to spending some time touring the ship. If anyone remembers my Dad(Dan Sullivan) send me an E-mail. I know he like to here from some of his old shipmates.

Great Website! I had the pleasure of going on a tour of The Battleship New Jersey before it was decommissioned. I was treated with so much respect, maybe because I was a female civilian:)? All I know is The Battleship New Jersey had the finest sailors (from 1986 - 1989)! Especially those country boys from the 'southern' states. The guys from the New Jersey were also the best dancers :) - Thanks for keeping protecting our great nation then and now. Wherever I am, and there's a "Fleet Week" when the Navy's in town, I smile and think of all the sailors who made my summers fun, just good ol' fun, dancing, dinner, drinking. Peace.

This past week-end my family and I visited the New Jersey. I want to say that it was all and more that I thought it would be. I can't say enough about the volunteers as they were outstanding. They let me see things I had wanted to, and everyone was very kind .The ship looks great, some things have changed but over all it was the same. I was in the 3rd division and served 1943 to 1946 I would love to hear from anyone that was in the 3rd division . I hope you all get to see this ship she is a beauty.

I ran into another former Jersey Sailor the other day. FC2 K. Peters of GM Div. He reported onboard the USS Normandy the other day during my watch. He is now a Lt. I am very close to my retirement and as I look back on my career the time I served on board the USS New Jersey was the Highlight of my career. I would like to find some old friends if anyone knows where they are; Clint Olds, Steve Gothro, Dave Ruble. Dennis Minton lives in Texas last I heard. Lt Cochrane got out for a job trading stocks on the NYSE. Lt Bradenburg of G4 Division was my XO when I reported to Wallops Island Va in 1997. If anyone knows how I can get a copy of Battle Rock one or two let me know. I remember that I did not buy one as I thought this video tape thing was all just a passing fad. Here's an update on the USS New Jersey Memorial & Museum. She is now looking awesome on the Delaware River in Camden, NJ, three miles upriver from the shipways where she was launched on December 7, 1942, almost 60 years ago.

Her new $15 million pier is being topped with brick pavers and the 19 black granite sentinels representing each battle star and ribbon awarded have been installed along the pier. The two elevator towers are complete and are being tested for use. All of contractors will be off the pier by the end of June. The ship looks great after undergoing a top to waterline repainting. The top third of the ship has been illuminated by a professionally designed lighting system. Another $750,000 is needed to complete the lighting project. The teak deck has been made safe but needs to be replaced at an estimated cost of $8 million.

Over 1,000 guests now tour the ship every weekday and over 2,000 on Sat. and Sun. Scouts and other youth groups are spending nights on board as part of a unique encampment education program. Veterans groups hold ceremonies regularly on her decks.

The Battleship New Jersey's staff and volunteers are looking forward to the September reunion of the ship's greatest treasure -- the veterans who served on her through war and peace. Don't miss this year's reunion. It will be greatest ever.

Folks, thanks so much for all who have contributed to such a worthwhile cause! I was a 3rd commissioning crew "Plankowner", onboard from 1/82 - 4/85 and was honored to have served aboard her. Two things, are the brass Fire Pumproom/Piping/Valve location placards I designed still in her firerooms & Main machinery rooms and how about using the group Cheap Trick's "Gonna Raise H**l"-vs-Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" for your intro tune? For those of us on board for pre-comm. it was used on one of our first ship related videos and during break-away after un-rep's. Rick Nielsen's guitar work goes great when heard during a broadside shot!! Very aggressive song for a very aggressive ship...BRING OUR BATTLESHIPS BACK!
