I stopped watching CBS news years ago, too. Here's a link to the text of Andy Rooney's commentary from last Sunday night(10/24/04). http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/10/22/60minutes/rooney/main650949.shtml

Comments

I missed Andy Rooney's piece on battleships because I gave up on CBS years ago. In fact, I haven't watched any network news in recent years. My news comes from newspapers and the Fox news channel. It's been a refreshing change.

Comments

After watching CBS 60 Minutes (10/24/04)segment with Andy Rooney, I was totally amazed at his outright stupidity at his knowledge and history regarding U.S. battleships. If you saw and heard this piece, I'm sure you will agree. Up until now I have always enjoyed and understood his picking and so forth; usually for a good reason. Well, his intentions were lost on me, because all I got from it was sour grapes and bad information, which, was probably believed by the non-military-wise public. Between Dan Rather's on-air lies and now Rooney's obvious lack of historical facts and knowledge of battleships, I am DONE with CBS for my news. Period. I hope others who saw the show will also speak up. It's time to put an end to this distortion of facts about our military and more importantly, our namesake ship and her sisters.

I served from recom. school jan.68 until may69. I was BM2 5'th. Div. in charge of 5" and 16" retrogrades, as well as refueling the DD who provided our sonar protection crossing the pacific. Am looking forward to 2005 reunion. Oh ya, needed to retune my bos'n pipe after piping all the big brass at the re-commission ceremony.

What a great reunion we just experienced in Washington! Thanks very much to all who were involved in making this event happen. I am sure most everyone will be looking forward to the reunion next year on board. If I may, I would like to provide the following reminder. Master Chief Tom Helvig USN (Ret.) is the editor of an excellent online publication The Jerseyman, a news magazine that provides excellent information about our ship. Tom hopes to soon begin collecting stories from all USS New Jersey veterans who were crewmen during the Korean War cruises. He would like to have contact with as many of us as possible to obtain information for these stories and to possibly obtain a photo of the Korean War crewmen during our 2005 reunion on board. If you haven’t already registered with Tom, there is a contact page on the web site, which you can use to provide your contact information. Tom’s E-mail address is also there if you prefer to send your contact information that way.

Hi, just got back from visiting the ship, haven't seen her since 1969. I commissioned and de-commissioned her from 1967-1969 on the Vietnam cruise. I must say this trip was a wonderful experience, I brought my wife and my brother and his wife. They were flabbergasted to say the least at the size and beauty of her. We took the 2 hour tour, a guide named Frank brought us around and his knowledge and enthusiasm made this very enjoyable and informative. Hats off to the job they did on restoring her. After the tour, Frank had me sign a wall where all the other visiting crew members signed their names, then to top it off he arranged for a special trip to Broadway and to #4 engine room where I served, and then to my old bunk area. The old bunks were upgraded to more modern ones, but I got to see the area anyway. Apparently, the Engine room will eventually be opened up to the tour. It was a wonderful experience and I can't thank everyone involved enough. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart. Larry Damigella

We have moved and had to go w/ another online service. I had hoped to get back up to see the ship this year but looks like next year so we have that to look forward to. I hear all the skuttlebutt about the ship loosing money ,after all the hard work everyone has done I hope they can keep the gangplank open for all to see and enjoy this beautiful ship that served w/ honors for all that she was called on to do. It would be a shame for the generations to come not to have this national treasure to enjoy. Peace to all ......

If you served on the New Jersey during Vietnam, you may remember when we came along side the cruiser USS Newport News off the coast of Vietnam. I have some photos I took of the Newport News that day. We high lined someone between ships, but I don't recall who or why. Anyway, when looking through my old photos last week I came across the photos of a cruiser with hull number 148. I didn't know which one it was so I searched the internet for that hull number and their website came up. In searching the site I found this page which has photos that one of their crew took of us!. Check it out. http://www.uss-newport-news.com/nnpix/RUSS_MACK_pix.htm Nice photos of a great looking ship. Bet they were impressed!

For those who are taking the Spirit of Washington dinner cruise at the Reunion, please note this information from their website concerning proper dress. Last Minute Questions What should I wear? For evening cruises, appropriate attire is casual to dressy. Men traditionally wear slacks and sport coats, with or without ties. Women wear dresses or nice pants. We do not recommend T-shirts, jeans, shorts or sneakers in the evening. Afternoon cruises are generally more relaxed, and casual attire is fine. I come from a family with many years of Naval Service among them. I lived on the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard from 1978 to 1982. My father was attached to Naval Security at that time. I saw many great ships but none impressed me as much as The New Jersey. I can honestly say that we will never see another ship anything like the Iowa class battleships. I lost my grandfather a few years ago to heart problems. He was a Korean Veteran having served on the USS "Minny" Which I believe was a carrier. I remember looking through his cruise books when I was little and was hoping that if anyone out there had anything from the "Minny" from that time could contact me. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Bryan R. Schmidt, bryanbeerdog@aol.com

My wife Tanya and I were in Philly on some very upsetting family business several months ago. I took her over to Camden to see the ship. I cannot commend you guys on how nice everything is and the presentation was amazing. I come from a Naval family with many years of service and have seen almost every ship and aircraft I can imagine, but to my wife it was a learning experience that we both enjoyed and cannot wait to do again. I was unable to get our pictures taken that day though. Would you be able to send me an address or email for the photographer that handles the pictures at the entrance? I would greatly appreciate that, if you could. I can only say that we are both looking forward to returning for another visit soon and can only hope that you guys are able to keep up the good work. Sir or Ma'am, I served aboard the big " J " from 1989 to 1991, unfortunately I decommed her and it was in fact the saddest day of my life to lay to rest the best Battleship in the fleet. Anyway I served in her main battery turret # 2 left gun. I was wondering if the brass plaque that the last gunners of turret 2 is still just inside the tail hatch of the turret? Very respectfully, Kenneth W Smith at the time I was a GMG3.

To:       All WW2 veterans that served aboard USS NEW JERSEY, and WW2 veterans serving today as volunteers aboard Battleship NEW JERSEY…

From:   Master Chief Tom Helvig, USN/Ret.
             Writer/Editor of The Jerseyman

Subj:     Commemorative WW2 issue of The Jerseyman

The year of 2005 will mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War 2.  To commemorate this historic event, we plan to devote the entire January 2005 issue of The Jerseyman to WW2 crewmen that served aboard USS NEW JERSEY, and WW2 veterans that are serving Battleship NEW JERSEY as volunteers today.

We are asking if on Columbus Day Monday, October 11, 2004 , USS NEW JERSEY  WW2 crewmen, and our volunteer WW2 veterans can try to make it to the ship for a group photograph.  We will setup and take the group photos between 1100 and 1130 hours.   Along with the photo, we have also asked Dr. Tom Banit of Kean University to be aboard, and he will record the oral histories of WW2 veterans that want to participate.  Those that cannot be interviewed on October 11th, will be offered other dates to record their WW2 oral histories.

With the January 2005 issue of The Jerseyman, we have an opportunity to recognize individually, and as a group, those that served aboard USS NEW JERSEY during WW2, and those WW2 veterans that serve her today as volunteers.  It is also planned to take individual photos of each attending WW2 veteran, and include your Name/Rate/Ship/Station, and WW2 Date of entry to Date of discharge.   We will also ask you to please describe one WW2 story to be included with your photo in this commemorative issue.

For all those that participate in this effort, we will provide an archival color laser printing of the January 2005 issue mailed to your home.   (This is one issue that you may want to keep for your grandchildren.)

If you know of any World War 2 veterans that served aboard NEW JERSEY, or a WW2 vet that is a volunteer aboard NEW JERSEY, and that may not otherwise receive this message, please FORWARD, or pass the word...

Some addressees may have received this message only for information purposes.  Some of you may know of WW2 USS NEW JERSEY veterans in the Tri-state area that might also be able to make it, or if you know of any without a computer… please pass the word.  We don’t want to leave anyone out.

We hope to see you all on October 11, 2004!
Many thanks,

Tom

I am looking for a forward observer that patroled with my outfit in Viet Nam in 1967. I was a corpsman with Charlie 1/7, 1st Marine division, at hill 55 west of Da Nang. This fellow was I believe Mormon, and stepped on a mine. All hell broke loose at that time, and I had to remove what was left of his foot. After treating him, we got him lifted out and back to 1st Med Bn. I don't have his name, and have been haunted for 35 years if he made it ok. It was pretty rough for him. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to get in touch with him. Thanks, Bob Marshall (formerly HM2) Palmer, PA

Hello my name is Rachel Owens. My grandfather served on the New Jersey after it was commissioned. I believe he was either a Petty Officer or a Chief Petty Officer. I don't see him on the list, but I know he served on this ship. His name was Melvin J. Keldsen, lived in Duluth Minn. His bio is as follows- During ww2 he served 40 mths with the navy as an architectural draftsman and anti-aircraft gunner, was on the ship torpedoed at CASABLANCA and fought in 33 major naval battles. My Great Cousin Donace told me this- The New Jersey was in mothballs here in Bremerton in the early 70's. I watched it sail down Puget Sound. Quite impressive to say the least. It was the largest battleship Gma/Gpa and all of us got to tour it. Mel used to tell me that he sat up in the tower (don't know what it is really called) in rough seas, guess he liked the rolling of the ship. He also used to tell me about the photographers on the ship taking pictures of the battles, and when the guns went off, they would fall down. He got a kick out of that!! I was only 6 years old or so. I think he was in some famous battles. Anyhow- I'm curious if you possibly have any pictures of Melvin in your collection. Also, I wanted to know if the Pharm J T KElLY could of been a Jack Kelly. You can find him in the Chief warrant officers and Warrant officers. I am trying to get a hold of a Jack Kelly because he is my great uncle. My grandfather Melvin met my grandmother Kathleen Kelly in Norfolk, NJ. She served as a USO at the American Theatre Wing. Please show this information to anyone who is still living that may have served on the NEW JERSEY or was at Casablanca. I'm desperately trying to find the family of my grandmother so that I can find where my Kelly roots come from. Rachel Owens I'm including a photo of my grandparents for you. Thank you for taking the time to read my long letter. I'm sorry if I talk to much. I'm from Texas FYI-Melvin Keldsen passed away on Feb 9, 1963. Kathleen Kelly Keldsen passed away in April 1952 as a result of a bad car wreck.

I think you have an excellent web site that's quite informative. My grandfather S.Stevens of Toledo,Ohio served on the "Jersey" from Nov. 44 til Jan. 46 in L division. Before his death in the spring of 79 he gave me his diary of his time spent on ship. It is one of my most treasured items and gave me my love of the Iowa class battleships! Thank You

The website is a great way for former shipmates to connect that may have otherwise not been able to do so. My father was especially proud of serving on the USS New Jersey during WWII. He also served in Korea but not sure which ship. My father enlisted at age 17 years old. Unfortunately he died before this website became known. He did participate in a documentary about the USS New Jersey before is death in 1993. So if any of you have seen it, his name was John Abate formerly of Bayonne, New Jersey. My mother is still alive and living in Monmouth County. So if anyone remembers my father you can contact me by email and I will rely the information to my mother. I know if my father was alive he would be on this website looking for his fellow shipmates. Good Luck and keep the website going. Daughter Donna Abate of former shipmate John Abate who served during WWII.

I was the best man at his wedding and lost track of him soon after I departed the ship. I ran into him in Hawaii in 1991 (when I was stationed there), the New Jersey pulled in on it's last leg of the 1990 WESTPAC, we had a great time and relived memories of being on board the ship. served on the New Jersey as an OS2 from June of 1982- Feb 1984. recently toured the ship and it brought back memories. Overall the ship is in good condition. If any former crew members go to tour make sure you tell them you are one. The tour is free and they will let you tour more of the ship then the average tour routs and you can sign a wall too.

It's a sad day that the man who brought back the Iowa class battleships for the last time has past away.  May God be with his family. If it wasn't for President Reagan I would not have had the chance to serve onboard the best battleship in the navy and make CPO there too. I can think of three of the saddest day in my life. To anyone who attended the pre-deactivation ceremony[ies] aboard the Jersey in Long Beach in August 1969. There was a family cruise, and other special activities. My grandfather, INOMATA KINGI, OSC1 (Officer's Steward First Class) was invited as the "oldest living crewmember" of the Jersey, having served on the first ship (BB-16) from 1911-1913. I am looking for information, photographs, flyers, any sort of memorabilia that anyone of you may have kept. Writing a book about his life in serving Naval High Command, as well as the Navy's help in his obtaining citizenship, exemption from internment and having worked with some of the greatest naval pioneers and heroes of yesterday's battleship, cruiser and aeronautic navy. A great website for the USS New Jersey. I have a question since some very old photos have been given to me, one is of my father Clifford C. Renner (or it has his name on it) he is dressed in blues with a cap and on the front band says USS New Jersey it resembles a flat pancake with a ribbon on the side. Yet another postcard photo post marked USS New Jersey April 18, 1910 . was there a ship of the same name in 1910? and this is signed Elsie E. Renner Jr. (Cliffords brother). and wearing whites he is standing on deck. Is there any way to trace the old rosters and find out if Clifford was actually on this ship? Thanks, Linda

Hi everyone, My dad John Francis Porter Jr. served on the Jersey in the Korean war. This ship meant the world to him, as did the men who served with him. Today is the 13th anniversary of my fathers death. I only hope that he is celebrating with those who are also no longer with us. Thank you ALL who have made our country the "Land of the free, and the Home of the BRAVE"! God Bless you all.

I am his son in law Duane Campbell, and along with his sons Tom and Tim Henderson am very proud of him and his service on board the USS New Jersey. Jack, his wife Jackie and son Tim visited his ship and past shipmates just within the last couple of years. You could tell by the sparkle in his eyes when he talked about her that he loved the experience of serving on her. He will be truly missed. Do you remember the first time you requested permission to come aboard the USS New Jersey? Walked along side her and saw those anchors hanging stronger then anything else you had ever seen. The first time you looked up and saw those massive guns pointing in a direction you had to look towards. The first time you turns 45, saluted the ensign, turned back 45 and saluted the Officer of the Deck and heard the words; "Permission Granted, Welcome Aboard" While it is a bit early, I am planning an article for the Jersey Bounce about that "First Time" in preparation for our reunion in 2005. I think the Jersey and the men of the USS NEW JERSEY are fantastic - especially those men who served in Beirut. I was a MARINE stationed at the airport in 1982 32 M.A.U and in 1983-1984 22 M.A.U. I will never forget the night the JERSEY opened up . I was a CPL. squad leader we were on an all out alert. I was was on my way to check one of our bunkers and the men manning it when night turned to day. I thought it was a nuclear attack. I leaped to the ground put my hands over my private parts like I was taught in bootcamp. That's it I thought we were dead. But it was only the JERSEY firing. We were not even told . You men did great . Thanks

Happy New Year to all, I haven't posted here for a while, and have a new e-mail address. I was aboard for the last 2 cruises through out the Decommissioning. I started out in 1st division, with the likes of BM3 Robb Watson, Bobby Jo Dingler from Tyler Texas, Todd Schuler, Jeff Deborah, Uhrig, to many to name, I have talked to a couple old shipmates, but not nearly enough. Any one remember when we almost lost an anchor in Singapore. I was on the phones on the Fo'c'el getting ready to jump. By the second cruse I had moved to Admin. In the print shop. I missed the main deck, but not waterways & watches. I still hung out with my deck buddies on the beach. Is there a directory being put together? I know I have e-mailed with some of you in the past, but I don't keep up with my aol mail, so I'm sure I have missed a lot. Are there other places on the web where people post? This site is awesome, thank you to the folks that put this together, and especially the volunteers, who have worked so hard fixing the Jersey back up. I saw her from the water in Bremerton right before they moved her. She looked so bad, I could have cried. But so many people have done so much for us by fixing her up. I can’t wait to come see her again. To Life Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness.

E-Mail me and I'll fill you in, its an easy task, it just takes some to get started and when the Shipmates of Vietnam that are in the South District are (address, phone, E-Mail, div. years on board) verified it will be very very easy. Think of it as a P.D.L. system like on ship, (Night Orders) ie. You would be the space L.P.O. and report to the Div. L.P.O. all the information. Everything is explained in the New Revised 1-Oct-03 By Laws. Art.VI, Sect III, Era District Volunteers. We also need a Secretary, Member-at-Large so lets get on the bandwagon. I went with a friend a Nick Cagnino who was a bt3class. We had a grand time and it brought back a lot of memories just being on her again. Anyway all of you old shipmates have a happy holiday and a great new year. tony m.

Had great time at the Las Vegas reunion. Thanks to all who made it such a success. "4.0, Well done!!!" Sadly we only had 5 shipmates representing the Vietnam, Lebanon and last Decommissioning crews. We hope to see all those who attended the Las Vegas reunion, and hopefully, many more from the 1969-1991 crews. See you all in DC.

Reading about the Battle ship and what it meant to all who were fortunate enough to serve onboard, brought back a flood of memories which I will always cherish. My life onboard began as a snipe and ended as a personnelman 1985 to 1989). Good times all of them (though I'm not sure about having to clean the bilges). None the less, I will be making a trip this next summer to finally set foot back onboard and I know it will be an experience (I definitely remember my first Bravo Zulu) . Fair Winds and Following Seas to all New Jersey crewmates.

I am searching for cruise books for the years 1956-1959. My father, Kyriacos "Charlie" Euripides served on the New Jersey during those years and has an interest in collecting these books.

If anyone has a cruise book from this period, please contact me.

If anyone remembers my dad, and would like to drop him a line, please do. He has very fond memories of duty on the bridge, Eastern Med, Artic circle and Cuba.

Thank you in advance for your help.

It is just about time for another issue of the Jersey Bounce. As your editor, I will be at the reunion putting together a story about what brings so many of us together each year to renew friendships and share stories. I'm still a bit worried about Las Vegas. I don't think it knows exactly what the city is on for with a bunch of Battleship Sailors on Liberty. I am also looking for a few good "sea stories" as well. I won't be able to make it to the hotel until Friday afternoon, but I will be in the ships store on Friday from 2:30 - 4:00 and on Saturday from 10:00 - 12:00 and again at night for the dinner. Of course, a good sailor never misses breakfast, so I'll be there too. I hope we have SOS. Anyway, Stop by and say hi. Peter VandeWalle; Lebanon Era

Hello, I toured the ship today and was totally blown away by our guide Frank Foord. I hope I got his last name right. You all were wonderful! My Father, my friend and his father Joe ( served on the Iowa in WWII) My knowledge of WWII Navy is limited. My Father flew 28 combat missions from England during WWII. I learned so much today! For your information:

A former Shipmate of the New Jersey passed away on 30 Aug 03.

LT. Commander Wilfred Curley (Ret. 1972). An Annapolis Grad. Class of 1950.

He was laid to rest today, 3 Sept 03 at the National Cemetery at Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA. He is survived by his loving Wife of 52 years and numerous children and Grandchildren.

Although I have only know him for the past six or so years, I grew to love him as a Brother. And think of him as my Uncle or even at times my Dad.

Let NO man think otherwise. He loved HIS Ship. In the short time I knew him, there was nothing that happened that upset him more than the news SHE was being mothballed!

"ANYWAYS".

May GOD Bless Curley. and his Widow and Children and Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren.

And above all, GOD BLESS AMERICA !

I'll try to be brief, but it's tough when writing about the New Jersey. Definitely the best time of my life, the five years I spent there, from 1986 to 1991. If you haven't made the trip to Philadelphia/Camden to see the battleship, make plans to do so. I finally visited this April, and was immediately transported back in time. I snuck off the tour and found my rack and lockers in the X-2 berthing compartment, which was extremely cool.

I have many great memories about the people who served there, the places we were able to visit and all the things I learned that charted the course of my life after New Jersey. Thanks to everyone who served in my era, along with all of those who came before me...and especially those who were involved in the restoration and the current safekeeping of the ship.

Please hold future reunions onboard the ship! We have the best venue of all; many of us have waited many years to walk the decks once again, and remember all those wonderful times.

Thanks,

Scott Henson Portland, Oregon

Does anyone know of any pictures of the audience (us) at the show with Ann Margaret in Long Binh. There was a picture in a recent issue of Peoples Magazine showing the Audience (G.I.'s) from the stage with Bob Hope. It looked like some of the guys I was with when we saw the show and it looked like Long Binh. Could anyone confirm?? Tony

But just hoping to get reunited with the roger division ship mates again that I haven't seen since Sept. of 1955.. The Big J was a mighty ship.. I would like to hear from any one in the other divisions that know me or remember me from 1953 to 1955.. Take care and may God Bless each one Sam

Well finally after 52 years my wife and I got to see my ship the big J. we met a fellow shipmate named Nick Cagnino and we took the grand tour. We spent 4 hours there and saw all the changes but we never got to see the engineering spaces, which the chief said would be done in about six months. The ship really brought back some good memories; [ it was my home for four years and a lot of miles and countries.] Glad I made it home.   Tony Mariano

Today I spent over 4 hours on this web site -- the longest time I have ever searched any site for anything.

I was a crewmember on board New Jersey from 13 January 1982 to 13 August 1984. Until this writing, The Battleship had become all but a fading memory -- I am now currently recovering from a fantastic trip back in time.

She certainly was an awesome ship to behold! Of all the ships I ever sailed, she was the only one that handled the sea as though crafted by the Hand of God! And now equally timeless, too, it is fitting to see that She is so honorably immortalized.

Hey all shipmates. I served on the Big J from April 1982 to December 1985, including the tour to Beirut. Would love to hear from any old shipmates. I will be retiring on August 1st after 22 years onboard the Battleship WISCONSIN moored in Norfolk. Then I head to Orlando to begin a new career. Any shipmates in the area are most cordially invited to join this old Master Chief and his family at 1300 under Turret 3. Any of my old running buddies... email me back!! I will change my contact address to my personal one after the ceremony, so reply now!!

My dad, Raymond Webb, served on the New Jersey during WWII. Unfortunately, he died in 1971 and although I inherited all of his navy pictures and mementos I cannot ask him about them. Some of the pictures were labeled, others are not. Some of the identified shipmates are - "Zeke" Lombard, "Chick" Usher, Ted Anderson, Lombard, Harry Cary, Head, Woodruff, Schoech, Billos, Thomas. Some of the pictures are on board ship, at Yokosuka, Japan (Enlisted Men's Club) and Yokohama, Japan, at Long Beach, California and Tijuana, Mexico. I believe my dad was a radarman (is that the right term?) and I would be interested in hearing from any of the men listed above or anyone else who knew my dad. Also I took my family to tour the New Jersey in Nov. 2001 and was excited to give my children a chance to connect to a grandfather they never knew. Thanks to all who made that possible.

I just purchased my plane tickets to Las Vegas, the hotel room is paid for and I am looking at every Vegas website that won't get me in trouble before we all meet in September. For those of you who have never been to Las Vegas, it is beyond expectation. It is kind of like the MasterCard commercial. Visiting Las Vegas with a few hundred Battleship New Jersey Sailors; "Priceless!" So far, I have heard from Seals, Lyons & Gunderson from S-2 division / Lebanon Era. I know more of you are out there. Hope to hear for you all!

Visited the ship in May and enjoyed myself immensely. However, I did leave with a bit of an empty feeling. We were shown areas I had not been while a part of the crew (the bridge, officers' country, communications, etc.), but aside from the mess hall, nothing of the crews' quarters on the 2nd deck or the Holland Tunnel (or Broadway) which I really wanted to see. Hopefully, that will change in the future. We came to Camden via public transportation, which was an adventure in itself. My advice to anyone who visits the ship is to get hooked up with a small group of visitors. If you take the tour with a large group you will miss some of the spoken info. I will say that our guide did an excellent job. Hope to go back when there is more open to see. Gordon Hay (1953/1954) S-2 Div.

I was on the Big J from 1/82 until 4/85, having come from the 'gator navy (i.e. an LPD, USS Ogden (LPD-5) out of San Diego). Having been a selectee for her 3rd recommissioning crew, short of my wedding and the birth of my children, the proudest moment of my life was receiving those orders to report to LBNSY and become a part of the illustrious history of the Iowa-class battleships. We all were truly fortunate to share in a unique experience that was cut short and now leaves our Marine brothers without adequate NGFS, please go to USNFSA's website and help to BRING OUR BATTLESHIPS BACK!!

I received orders for the New Jersey in late 1967 after serving almost two years on board the Sylvania AFS 2, home ported Naples, Italy. {we never left the Med.} We received cargo from Her sister ship the Mars AFS 1 in Nam. I left the New Jersey in Oct. or Nov. 1968. I keep looking for shipmates from #4 engine room, "F Troop". I hope to make a reunion someday. When I first enlisted I was told that the older you got you would only remember the good times. I still remember some of the bad but the good ones are more fun.

I served on board from 1985 till it decommed. The NEW JERSEY has been and always will be my greatest time that I served in the Navy. The crew and the camaraderie were second to none. I worked in #3 engineroom "MAIN CONTROL". I started out as a lowly messenger and left as an MMOW. The cruises and the ports-o-call were the best that I ever seen in the Navy. Like the 86 cruise when we left on 4 screws and came back on 2. The cruise from down under when we spent 2 1/2 months in Austrialia. That alone was worth the deployment. Captain Katz renting us yachts for liberty boats. To MMCM Baker betting us that we couldn't beat him to the bars in the P.I. for a round of MOJO. The final deployment when the BIG "J" entered the persian gulf.

I remember standing watch while she was going through the transformation from being the mightiest warship on the face of the earth, reflecting on all the history that she's been through and the men that sailed on her before me. Knowing that she will never fire her guns in anger anymore, hear the thunderous roar of her engines, the footsteps of the men running up and down the passageways. We were the last of the true steamin' demons. It was a sad and happy day to see BIG "J" go. It decommed on my birthday and that's the only reason it was happy.

I visit BIG "J" quite frequently because I only live a 1/2 hour away. I love showing it off to friends and family. I also will be conducting my retirement ceremony on her. It's fitting end to my Navy career on the ship that started it. If there are any snipes from that time frame out I would like to here from you.

I reported to the New Jersey Pre-commissioning Detail in San Diego in December 1967. I served in No. 3 Fireroom and the B-Division Maintenance Gang. My memories of the "Jersey" will stay with me for the rest of my life. Especially since I have "USS New Jersey BB-62" tattooed on my left leg. Wish I could make the Reunion in Vegas but I will be thinking of everyone. Bill Steinebach, BTCS(SW) Retired.
