CommentsI stopped watching CBS news years ago, too. Here's a link to the text of Andy Rooney's commentary from last Sunday night(10/24/04). http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/10/22/60minutes/rooney/main650949.shtml
CommentsI missed Andy Rooney's piece on battleships because I gave up on CBS years ago. In fact, I haven't watched any network news in recent years. My news comes from newspapers and the Fox news channel. It's been a refreshing change.
CommentsAfter watching CBS 60 Minutes (10/24/04)segment with Andy Rooney, I was totally amazed at his outright stupidity at his knowledge and history regarding U.S. battleships. If you saw and heard this piece, I'm sure you will agree. Up until now I have always enjoyed and understood his picking and so forth; usually for a good reason. Well, his intentions were lost on me, because all I got from it was sour grapes and bad information, which, was probably believed by the non-military-wise public. Between Dan Rather's on-air lies and now Rooney's obvious lack of historical facts and knowledge of battleships, I am DONE with CBS for my news. Period. I hope others who saw the show will also speak up. It's time to put an end to this distortion of facts about our military and more importantly, our namesake ship and her sisters.
CommentsI served from recom. school jan.68 until may69. I was BM2 5'th. Div. in charge of 5" and 16" retrogrades, as well as refueling the DD who provided our sonar protection crossing the pacific. Am looking forward to 2005 reunion. Oh ya, needed to retune my bos'n pipe after piping all the big brass at the re-commission ceremony.
CommentsWhat a great reunion we just experienced in Washington! Thanks very much to all who were involved in making this event happen. I am sure most everyone will be looking forward to the reunion next year on board. If I may, I would like to provide the following reminder. Master Chief Tom Helvig USN (Ret.) is the editor of an excellent online publication The Jerseyman, a news magazine that provides excellent information about our ship. Tom hopes to soon begin collecting stories from all USS New Jersey veterans who were crewmen during the Korean War cruises. He would like to have contact with as many of us as possible to obtain information for these stories and to possibly obtain a photo of the Korean War crewmen during our 2005 reunion on board. If you haven’t already registered with Tom, there is a contact page on the web site, which you can use to provide your contact information. Tom’s E-mail address is also there if you prefer to send your contact information that way.

CommentsHi, just got back from visiting the ship, haven't seen her since 1969. I commissioned and de-commissioned her from 1967-1969 on the Vietnam cruise. I must say this trip was a wonderful experience, I brought my wife and my brother and his wife. They were flabbergasted to say the least at the size and beauty of her. We took the 2 hour tour, a guide named Frank brought us around and his knowledge and enthusiasm made this very enjoyable and informative. Hats off to the job they did on restoring her. After the tour, Frank had me sign a wall where all the other visiting crew members signed their names, then to top it off he arranged for a special trip to Broadway and to #4 engine room where I served, and then to my old bunk area. The old bunks were upgraded to more modern ones, but I got to see the area anyway. Apparently, the Engine room will eventually be opened up to the tour. It was a wonderful experience and I can't thank everyone involved enough. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart. Larry Damigella
CommentsHello, I am Charles Hrenchir. I served on the Jersey 1943-1946. Was a 20MM Gunner and then later in the Print Shop. Would love to hear from anyone from that time. Charles

CommentsI am hoping to see my shipmates from the Roger division tomorrow wednsday the 29th. See you than.. sam
CommentsWe have moved and had to go w/ another online service. I had hoped to get back up to see the ship this year but looks like next year so we have that to look forward to. I hear all the skuttlebutt about the ship loosing money ,after all the hard work everyone has done I hope they can keep the gangplank open for all to see and enjoy this beautiful ship that served w/ honors for all that she was called on to do. It would be a shame for the generations to come not to have this national treasure to enjoy. Peace to all ......
CommentsIf you served on the New Jersey during Vietnam, you may remember when we came along side the cruiser USS Newport News off the coast of Vietnam. I have some photos I took of the Newport News that day. We high lined someone between ships, but I don't recall who or why. Anyway, when looking through my old photos last week I came across the photos of a cruiser with hull number 148. I didn't know which one it was so I searched the internet for that hull number and their website came up. In searching the site I found this page which has photos that one of their crew took of us!. Check it out. http://www.uss-newport-news.com/nnpix/RUSS_MACK_pix.htm Nice photos of a great looking ship. Bet they were impressed!
CommentsFor those who are taking the Spirit of Washington dinner cruise at the Reunion, please note this information from their website concerning proper dress. Last Minute Questions What should I wear? For evening cruises, appropriate attire is casual to dressy. Men traditionally wear slacks and sport coats, with or without ties. Women wear dresses or nice pants. We do not recommend T-shirts, jeans, shorts or sneakers in the evening. Afternoon cruises are generally more relaxed, and casual attire is fine. The website is http://www.spiritcitycruises.com/WashDC/index.html
CommentsI come from a family with many years of Naval Service among them. I lived on the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard from 1978 to 1982. My father was attached to Naval Security at that time. I saw many great ships but none impressed me as much as The New Jersey. I can honestly say that we will never see another ship anything like the Iowa class battleships. I lost my grandfather a few years ago to heart problems. He was a Korean Veteran having served on the USS "Minny" Which I believe was a carrier. I remember looking through his cruise books when I was little and was hoping that if anyone out there had anything from the "Minny" from that time could contact me. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Bryan R. Schmidt, bryanbeerdog@aol.com
CommentsMy wife Tanya and I were in Philly on some very upsetting family business several months ago. I took her over to Camden to see the ship. I cannot commend you guys on how nice everything is and the presentation was amazing. I come from a Naval family with many years of service and have seen almost every ship and aircraft I can imagine, but to my wife it was a learning experience that we both enjoyed and cannot wait to do again. I was unable to get our pictures taken that day though. Would you be able to send me an address or email for the photographer that handles the pictures at the entrance? I would greatly appreciate that, if you could. I can only say that we are both looking forward to returning for another visit soon and can only hope that you guys are able to keep up the good work. Bryan R. Schmidt
Comments(8SEP04) After reliving these moments again, I have decided to pay a visit to the Gray Lady during Veterans Day 2004. It will be my first visit back in over 20 years. God Speed All!...
CommentsSir or Ma'am, I served aboard the big " J " from 1989 to 1991, unfortunately I decommed her and it was in fact the saddest day of my life to lay to rest the best Battleship in the fleet. Anyway I served in her main battery turret # 2 left gun. I was wondering if the brass plaque that the last gunners of turret 2 is still just inside the tail hatch of the turret? Very respectfully, Kenneth W Smith at the time I was a GMG3.
CommentsTo all E Div crewmembers from the 55 to 57 era. I just talked to Ron H. Bischoff's wife who informed me that Ron died on May 30,2003 after a battle with cancer. I expressed my condolences from his crewmates. Gene Consolo Sep 7, 2004.

CommentsI am looking for a forward observer that patroled with my outfit in Viet Nam in 1967. I was a corpsman with Charlie 1/7, 1st Marine division, at hill 55 west of Da Nang. This fellow was I believe Mormon, and stepped on a mine. All hell broke loose at that time, and I had to remove what was left of his foot. After treating him, we got him lifted out and back to 1st Med Bn. I don't have his name, and have been haunted for 35 years if he made it ok. It was pretty rough for him. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to get in touch with him. Thanks, Bob Marshall (formerly HM2) Palmer, PA
CommentsRON BISCHOFF -- Your current e-mail address does not work. Please send me your revised address. Also, you probably want to change it on the New Jersey Deck Log. Gene Consolo
CommentsHello my name is Rachel Owens. My grandfather served on the New Jersey after it was commissioned. I believe he was either a Petty Officer or a Chief Petty Officer. I don't see him on the list, but I know he served on this ship. His name was Melvin J. Keldsen, lived in Duluth Minn. His bio is as follows- During ww2 he served 40 mths with the navy as an architectural draftsman and anti-aircraft gunner, was on the ship torpedoed at CASABLANCA and fought in 33 major naval battles. My Great Cousin Donace told me this- The New Jersey was in mothballs here in Bremerton in the early 70's. I watched it sail down Puget Sound. Quite impressive to say the least. It was the largest battleship Gma/Gpa and all of us got to tour it. Mel used to tell me that he sat up in the tower (don't know what it is really called) in rough seas, guess he liked the rolling of the ship. He also used to tell me about the photographers on the ship taking pictures of the battles, and when the guns went off, they would fall down. He got a kick out of that!! I was only 6 years old or so. I think he was in some famous battles. Anyhow- I'm curious if you possibly have any pictures of Melvin in your collection. Also, I wanted to know if the Pharm J T KElLY could of been a Jack Kelly. You can find him in the Chief warrant officers and Warrant officers. I am trying to get a hold of a Jack Kelly because he is my great uncle. My grandfather Melvin met my grandmother Kathleen Kelly in Norfolk, NJ. She served as a USO at the American Theatre Wing. Please show this information to anyone who is still living that may have served on the NEW JERSEY or was at Casablanca. I'm desperately trying to find the family of my grandmother so that I can find where my Kelly roots come from. Rachel Owens I'm including a photo of my grandparents for you. Thank you for taking the time to read my long letter. I'm sorry if I talk to much. I'm from Texas FYI-Melvin Keldsen passed away on Feb 9, 1963. Kathleen Kelly Keldsen passed away in April 1952 as a result of a bad car wreck.
CommentsGlad to se so many familiar names
CommentsI think you have an excellent web site that's quite informative. My grandfather S.Stevens of Toledo,Ohio served on the "Jersey" from Nov. 44 til Jan. 46 in L division. Before his death in the spring of 79 he gave me his diary of his time spent on ship. It is one of my most treasured items and gave me my love of the Iowa class battleships! Thank You
CommentsRay Hagedorn QM3 serving aboard the Jersey during its deployment to Viet Nam Sept 68 to Apr 69. Would love to hear from my ol shipmates.
CommentsThe website is a great way for former shipmates to connect that may have otherwise not been able to do so. My father was especially proud of serving on the USS New Jersey during WWII. He also served in Korea but not sure which ship. My father enlisted at age 17 years old. Unfortunately he died before this website became known. He did participate in a documentary about the USS New Jersey before is death in 1993. So if any of you have seen it, his name was John Abate formerly of Bayonne, New Jersey. My mother is still alive and living in Monmouth County. So if anyone remembers my father you can contact me by email and I will rely the information to my mother. I know if my father was alive he would be on this website looking for his fellow shipmates. Good Luck and keep the website going. Daughter Donna Abate of former shipmate John Abate who served during WWII.
CommentsI would like to get the forms for the reunion, banquet, etc. I want to make reservations for the banquet. I already have reservations at the Hilton.

Is there any way that I could get a list of the men in that category that served on the New Jersey? I did get to visit the ship in the S.Pacific for a short period of time during the war. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to give me. George Johnides gjbj2003@earthlink.net

CommentsI am looking forward to visiting with shipmates from 68-69 while in D.C. this Fall. Especially crewmembers from E Division. See you in September.
CommentsFound this site a couple of weeks ago. Great site. Would like to say the big J group was the best group of guys I served with during my navy career. Was in e div. The officer in charge was Lt. Gus Denecamp. Some of the guys I remembered and consider my friends are EM1 Mike Widow, EM2 Rick Gray, EM2 Ken Hawkins, EM2 Cliff Townes, EM3 Steve Myatt, EM3 Chris Walton, EM2 Dave Martins and EM2 Mike Fields. A great group of guys who I hope to run into again.
CommentsI forgot I was on her from Pre-com in 81 till after coming back from Lebanon. I worked in G-division and I will make it to the reunion in DC in Sept.. It is only 30 minutes away from me. Hope to see a lot of ship mates there.
CommentsHello. My name is Zack Lindsey. I was part of the Lebanon crew but it goes beyond that. My father was a spotter for her during 'Nam and my father-in-law was on her during Korea and last but not least my grand-father was on the original crew. I found out he worked in the same turrent and same gun as I did! I'm trying to find out from my family and get some of the pictures that they have of him on the ship to go with the ones that I already have.

CommentsI was onboard USS New Jersey from 1985 to 1989 (boarded as and FN and became a PN3 while onboard), my shipmate that I am looking for was onboard between 1987 to 1991 he was am SH in X-3 division (his name is Caster), I think he left the ship as an SH2. I was the best man at his wedding and lost track of him soon after I departed the ship. I ran into him in Hawaii in 1991 (when I was stationed there), the New Jersey pulled in on it's last leg of the 1990 WESTPAC, we had a great time and relived memories of being on board the ship. Best Regards, Raul "Gavin" Ramos ex- PN3 Ramos USS New Jersey (BB-62) X-2 Division
Commentshave not seen our reunion announced in navy times yet there must be a lot of nj vets out there that do not about us. cant make dc but am going to visit the az and big mo. god bless america
CommentsHello Shipmates, I am attempting to locate a shipmate of mine from my New Jersey days. He was SH2 Caster working out of S-3 Division. I was PN3 Ramos, X-2 division. If anyone know of PO Caster, please email me at your convenience rgramos@comcast.net Thank you.
Commentsserved on the New Jersey as an OS2 from June of 1982- Feb 1984. recently toured the ship and it brought back memories. Overall the ship is in good condition. If any former crew members go to tour make sure you tell them you are one. The tour is free and they will let you tour more of the ship then the average tour routs and you can sign a wall too.
CommentsIt's a sad day that the man who brought back the Iowa class battleships for the last time has past away. May God be with his family. If it wasn't for President Reagan I would not have had the chance to serve onboard the best battleship in the navy and make CPO there too. I can think of three of the saddest day in my life. The day my Dad past away, The day we decommissioned the New Jersey, and the day Mr. Reagan Left us. John Hagen MMC(SW)RET
CommentsDoes anyone have a copy of a muster roll of the original crew?
CommentsTo George Stavros, Please e-mail me back at this email address. I accidentally trashed yours. Of course I remember you well. Especially your "model" of the ship in my teletype repair shop. Keep in touch, Jim

CommentsI was with MARDET from Sept 87 to Sept 89. The best 2 years of my 20 year Marine Corps career. I have been reading these messages and finding myself getting "misty eyed" rembering "Big J." I have emailed some of you that I recognize from my WESTPAC 88 cruisebook (I'm on page 191). Please write back and say "Hey!" I have a cruisebook from 1983-1984 as well (I am not sure how I got it) in case anyone is interested. I have 7 VHS tapes of the 88 WESTPAC (complete with Russian spy ships and planes buzzing us) and plenty of pictures. I hope to get to Camden soon. I want to volunteer to do something for the ol' girl... Regards, GySgt (Ret.)Heald, USMC.

CommentsI served aboard the Jersey from 1987-1989 in 3rd Division under the Sea College Program. Have great memories from our WestPac in 1988-the "Australian Cruise". Good friends included: Tommy Sheehan, Matt Halcomb, Spencer Kelly. I have found Halcomb but not Sheehan or Kelly; if anyone has any info on those two I would greatly appreciate it. Hope to take my family out to see the Jersey some day and take a tour. Great times and memories. God Bless.

CommentsTo anyone who attended the pre-deactivation ceremony[ies] aboard the Jersey in Long Beach in August 1969. There was a family cruise, and other special activities. Below is a picture of my Grandpa on the Jersey back in August 69 (specific date would be appreciated if you have it. Grandpa's name is KINGI, INOMATA Officers Steward 1st Class. USN 1906 - 1937
CommentsGreat web site
CommentsA great website for the USS New Jersey. I have a question since some very old photos have been given to me, one is of my father Clifford C. Renner (or it has his name on it) he is dressed in blues with a cap and on the front band says USS New Jersey it resembles a flat pancake with a ribbon on the side. Yet another postcard photo post marked USS New Jersey April 18, 1910 . was there a ship of the same name in 1910? and this is signed Elsie E. Renner Jr. (Cliffords brother). and wearing whites he is standing on deck. Is there any way to trace the old rosters and find out if Clifford was actually on this ship? Thanks, Linda

CommentsHi everyone, My dad John Francis Porter Jr. served on the Jersey in the Korean war. This ship meant the world to him, as did the men who served with him. Today is the 13th anniversary of my fathers death. I only hope that he is celebrating with those who are also no longer with us. Thank you ALL who have made our country the "Land of the free, and the Home of the BRAVE"! God Bless you all.

CommentsIt is my regret to inform all of you that Jack Henderson Formerly of Indianapolis, Indiana and recently of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, past away Mar 19th after a brief but hard fought struggle with cancer. I am his son in law Duane Campbell, and along with his sons Tom and Tim Henderson am very proud of him and his service on board the USS New Jersey. Jack, his wife Jackie and son Tim visited his ship and past shipmates just within the last couple of years. You could tell by the sparkle in his eyes when he talked about her that he loved the experience of serving on her. He will be truly missed. God bless all of you have served and serve this great country!

CommentsDo you remember the first time you requested permission to come aboard the USS New Jersey? Walked along side her and saw those anchors hanging stronger then anything else you had ever seen. The first time you looked up and saw those massive guns pointing in a direction you had to look towards. The first time you turns 45, saluted the ensign, turned back 45 and saluted the Officer of the Deck and heard the words; "Permission Granted, Welcome Aboard" While it is a bit early, I am planning an article for the Jersey Bounce about that "First Time" in preparation for our reunion in 2005. If you have a memory and or a picture to share, please contact me at peterv_bb62@yahoo.com or mail it to me at 3701 East River Drive; Green Bay, WI 54301
