Attention shipmates, the curator aboard the BB-62 is in dire need of recent era (80's-90's) enlisted and officers uniform donations of any rating or rank. If anyone can help with these needs, please contact me for details. We have also dismantled part of the 5th Div berthing to be used as a display area and have found many pictures, letters, mailed and unmailed, ID's, etc, etc. I will be posting some of the items found with the names that I can come up with. The items are from the mid to late 80's including change up to a quarter but no green bills.

We need the uniforms for display in selected areas of the ship when it opens in Sept. Thanks for any help we can get. Regards, Bob Walters N-Div '55-'57

Gentlemen, before I start I would like to know if any one knows the following trivia about our great ship: What does number 7203 signify? You can send your answers to me at D3Fritz@aol.com . I'm so glad to see these sites dedicated to our ship. I boarded on 7 January 1987 and departed 21 July 1990. I served in the Army Infantry from Aug 1990 to Nov 1992, and later in the Seabees as a UT until an auto injury ended my career. I enjoyed both of them, but I loved the Infantry. NOTHING however stands up to being a member of the crew of the worlds most decorated warship. The ship Ronald Reagan recommissioned himself. I miss most of you guys, I suppose there are a few I don't mind not seeing HA HA. Just kidding! I would like to hear from all the Sailors and Marines from BB-62. I only hear from a few of my Army buddies and none of the Seabees... different types of units I guess.

MY NAME IS TIM FLYNN. I SERVED ABOARD THE BIG J FROM MARCH 1982 TO SEPT 1985. I WAS PART OF THE RE-COMMISSIONING CREW. I WAS A SIGNALMAN. SHE WAS A SHOWBOAT AND A PAIN AT TIMES. COULDN'T WAIT TO GET OFF OF HER, BUT WHEN I DID, GOD DID I WANT TO GO BACK. I LEFT HER AND WENT TO THE "GATOR" NAVY. MY FIRST DAY ON MY NEW LST, THERE WERE GUYS AT QUARTERS THAT LOOKED WORSE THAN ANY SNIPE WOULD AFTER CLEANING THE JERSEY BILGES. BOY, WAS I DISILLUSIONED. I JUST FIGURED EVERY SHIP WAS LIKE US. MILITARY CREASES, SPIT SHINES, THE WHOLE 9 YARDS. AFTER 3 DAYS AS LPO, THEY ALL LOOKED LIKE BATTLESHIP SAILORS. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYBODY THAT WAS THERE FROM 82-85. THE WORDS I MISS MOST IS "UNDERWAY.......SHIFT COLORS!" TAKE CARE

bklyczek@econolite.com  or bklyczek@hotmail.com

I was transferred to the New Jersey from a LSD stationed in Little Creek, VA as a 2nd Class QM. The New Jersey was just coming out of the moth ball fleet and needed several month to be prepared before commission at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

Once, commissioned, she had her sea trails and made way through the Panama Canal to be home stationed at Long Beach, Naval Shipyard. At Long Beach she still had to undergo a variety of testing from tip to stern, before heading to the gun line of north and South Viet-Nam.

On the gun-line around the DMZ the NJ made many a Friend especially Marine's. They enjoyed, her ability to throw a small vehicle 20+ miles.

Well, after NJ's first tour, I was transferred to in-country Viet-Nam, River Boats. Go figure, Large gun platform, small gun platform.

I look forward to talking with other shipmates.

Thanks, again to Ed Campbell for wearing his NJ jacket patch at the International Transportation Engineering Conference.

Best Wishes to all.

Sincerely, William ( Bill) A. Klyczek

Served onboard the Jersey form May 82 until December 84. When I reported aboard MACM Anderson was Chief Master at Arms. When MACM Anderson retired MACM Craw became the Chief Master at Arms. MACM Anderson retired as CWO3 and is currently Chief of Police of a small town in Oregon. MACM Craw retired and went to work with COMNAVSURFPAC and came aboard the USS Arbaham Lincioln to do a pre-inspection, inspection, of the Correctional Unit. While onboard the Jersey I became friends with FTGC Frank and had the pleasure of serving with him again when he was Command Master Chief of NAVWEPSTA Concord, CA.

While on the Jersey I served as on of the Command Investigators, taught Petty Officer Indoc, and served as treasurer and president of the First Class Mess. The most unforgettable person I met on the Jersey was Cdr Messina. It seemed that no matter where I went on liberty, Cdr Massina was always there.

Semper Fi ! I would like to thank the crew of the USS New Jersey that was stationed off the coast of South Vietnam during my time there in 1968 and 1969. You guys punished the enemy and kept them from getting to us jarheads .I can still remember the ground shaking every time you fired those big 16 inch guns over our heads . As we had heard that each shell weighed about 2,000 pounds , we used to say "there goes another Volkswagon!" The sound of one of those huge shells going over the top was one of the most frightening sounds I'd ever heard. Just knowing you guys were out there covering our butts made us all feel a little more secure ! L/CPL Dwight T. Powers , USMC , 2292388.

I enjoy coming back to read the comments in this deck log. I still see some people with names that are familiar each time I visit. This is a really good memorial to the crew of N. J. Its good to exchange email with Bob Hedrick and Doug Hoag. If there are any more crew members out there that were aboard in 54-57 give us some email. Thanks again to all concerned with the construction and maintenance of this web site. You are doing a great job men. I'll end this with a comment our Engineering officer made at a meeting when we decommissioned her in 1957. As long as there are men out there like all of you the USS New Jersey will never die.

Homer D. Tittle, Machinist Mate, USS New Jersey, USS Emmons, was my father. Homer died 25 years ago. He told me several stories about his time on the New Jersey, like the time New Jersey and Iowa were steaming side-by-side, and a Japanese torpedo bomber dropped his fish, which traveled the length of the ship, between both battleships and never touched anything. Dad said, "That had to be the saddest Japanese pilot there ever was." I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers Homer Tittle, who sang in the Glee Club and played the harmonica and the accordion. Came onboard with 50 other reservists in Jan of 1984 to relieve selected crew members for a month or so of leave. I really enjoyed my time onboard. I met many that I will never forget. I even saw Duane Mahaney a childhood friend.  What a small world!  The experiences will last a lifetime. To be selected from 50,000 other reservists will always remain a great pleasure.  Reminiscing in Germantown, TN.

What an adventure is was, a time in my life I will always remember and pass on to my kids. Along with a lot of nice people I met when I served. I worked no. 1 engine room. Speaking of pride when we where in Portland, one of the local news personnel made the comment that he hadn't seen so many crew members showing off their colors (meaning ball caps). There where other ships there as well, but they weren't sporting their colors. Goes to show how much pride we had and still do today. If any former crewmembers want to e-mail please do so.

I have recently begun trying to research my family tree in search of those who served, I am currently on active duty (army) in Germany and have a new found interest in other family members. My grandfather John Noll, Springfield Mass., served in the Navy in WWII, I know that he was a part of a flight crew as I have seen pictures of him in and around aircraft, I had been told that he was a gunner of some sort. I also have a photo album of his which is embossed on the cover USS NEW JERSEY, and I was trying to confirm that he was a crew member to help begin my research. Is there a muster roll online, or some similar place to find out if he was a crew member? Perhaps someone remembers him? Thanks for any help.

I really enjoy this site. I was on the the WORLD'S LARGEST BATTLESHIP in 1986. I started out in 1st Div. then went on to the Chaplain's office just aft of the mess decks. Chaplain Carroll Was the head Chaplain. I believe that he is now in D.C. as a Rear Adm? What I remember the most is standing watch on the bridge. Also, going to (gq) in number 1 turret in powder mag. I have a very large collection of MEDIA pamphlets because I was working with the Chaplains and they were always involved with big events. I also have a pretty good collection of mugs and patches. When I was on the ship just got back from the Middle East. We went on a WESTPAC - Korea, Sasabo, Phil, H.k., pattya,..etc. We were also the first battle group since WWII to take the place of a Aircraft Carrier in a Battle Group. I believe that the Battle Group was ROMEO? Anyways I really get a tear in my eye seeing the 887' 7'' without all of her weapons and shine. "HAZE GREY AND UNDERWAY" BATTLE "E". RP3 Joseph David

Now that I've retired twice, once from the Navy and again from the civilian workforce, I spent many a day thinking about my years onboard NEW JERSEY. I was in charge of the Captain's Office (CAPT J. Edward Snyder, Jr.) during the Vietnam era. I made many friends on this great ship and am willing to correspond with anyone wanting to keep in touch. This web-site is a life saver and I have certainly enjoyed reading all the entries in the Deck Log. Looking forward to Branson. Enjoyed myself immensely during the Colorado Springs reunion. Really hated to miss the Daytona Beach reunion, but it just couldn't be helped. Thanks. Dick

Wonderful site. This is my first visit. I recognized a couple names rifling through the e-mail messages, BT3 Martin, LT Foyt. When I was assigned to the Jersey out of c-school, I was rather upset, hoping to get shore station. The detailers knew better than I. Wouldn't trade the experience for the world. Look forward to hearing from any of my old shipmates.

I was the MarDet's First Sergeant. I received orders two weeks before the ship went up to Rose Fest in Portland OR. I went to Hawaii and Kuwait. The Jersey was one of my best duty stations. It is a shame they retired her. I didn't get a decommissioning plaque. Keep in touch and remember Semper Fidelis. Bob

Born and raised in the Garden State it was a very distinct privilege to serve onboard (Mar 86 to Oct 89). Some will remember me from the Bridge other will remember the coke machines I fought so hard to get. As well as the MARS calls I put through.

Appreciate the site. I have taken pride all these years in being a former Battleship sailor. And I envy the crew of the of the 1980's for the amount of years they served aboard her. I only served aboard from Apr. to Oct. 1969. Rode her to Bremerton for the decommissioning. Sad day. I wanted so much to head back to Nam and Blast the Cong with the 16 inchers !! What I remember most as a fresh recruit out of "A" school was the sheer SIZE of everything. The Most unusual thing was when we were in Bremerton, The USS Missouri was open (main deck only) and it was so "spooky" to be surrounded by the same structure and fixtures yet with no noise, no fans, no familiar sounds. A dead ship ! Weird!

My father, Frank Vecchione, served aboard the New Jersey and the Rochester while in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was in the occupational forces in Europe following WWII, approximately 1947 and did a tour of the Mediterranean on the New Jersey. As a kid I remember his stories of being awakened in the wee hours by gunnery exercises...by being thrown out of his bunk 5 decks below a 16-inch gun as it was fired and pushed the ship sideways. I also learned that there's no such thing as a 'retired' Marine.

He passed away Jan. 4, 2001, and I am writing this in the hopes that anyone who served with him would please contact me to share any memories.

I have always been proud that my dad was a Marine, and he was proud and humbled to serve aboard the Big J. It would be an honor and priviledge to hear from anyone who remembers him or served during that time. Thank you.

Hey shipmates. It's obvious by reading the comments here in the deck log that all of us who have served aboard this mighty ship have one thing in common...PRIDE!! And why shouldn't we. Everyone who sees this mighty vessel from near or far has always looked in awe at the awesome power shown so visibly on deck. When they see this ship they would all say "now there is a Naval Warship!" The pride on this ship runs deep, even to this day those who served on her from the very beginning, to those of us who served on her last, feel that pride. I served 4 1/2 years onboard, and made 3 Wespac's. Operated the Captains Gig for 2 1/2 years, was the GQ BMOW, and worked the upper handling room in mount 56 for GQ as well. Never did like having to roll the Bridge windows down to fire the big guns, or having to repair the damage done the the CO's boat after a gun fire exercise, but there was never anything that could compare to the excitement of firing those 16" guns. I SERVED ON THE NEW JERSEY IN KOREA 1951 AND THE MIDSHIPMAN CRUISE TO FRANCE IN 1952. WOULD LOVE TO CONTACT ANYONE FROM THE "A" DIVISION MACHINE SHOP AT THAT TIME. RICHARD ANDERSON, ANDY VARGO, CHILDS, OR DEWEY BABB (WHO I SAW AT THE LONG BEACH DECOMMISSIONING IN 1991).

I served in New Jersey from October 1981 - February 1983. I was the 38th crewmember reporting aboard her for the recommissioning at LBNSY. I was a Master Chief Master-At-Arms (MACM)and served as the Battleship's Chief Master-At-Arms as well as the X Division Officer and the CPOIC of the living barges (YRBM)in Long Beach Naval Shipyard. I went to the Fleet Reserve when I left the NJ only to return to active duty after only spending 8 months ashore! For those of you who remember our first MCPOC, FTCM Al GAMBETTA, he passed away a few years back from colon cancer, after beating throat cancer. A finer sailor never sailed in NJ. He had been part of the fire control crew when the NJ was commissioned for Viet Nam and fired the last salvo fired in VN. Would like to hear from all of my former shipmates. I retired for good in October 1988, from NAS Miramar, San Diego, as the Security Officer. I was commissioned as a CWO3, served in Rota and Miramar.

I served on BB-62 from Sept,'67-Dec,'69, nucleus recommissioning crew in Philly till decommissioning in Bremerton. I think she was the best duty in the Navy during Vietnam, but then again, all battleship sailors will say that!! I'd like to hear from any E Div. Shipmates from the 60's or any other era. I worked in distribution, no. 3 Engine/Fire Rooms and later, fore and aft diesels. I am in the process of compiling a list of E Div. Shipmates with addresses and emails in hope of organizing a get together in Camden when the ship opens up for visitors. Maybe late 2001 or summer of 2002 or during one of our Association Reunions. I can email my current list to anyone who would like it. "FFBBR"
